What is Coder Dojo?

A Coder Dojo class is a free, volunteer-led, community-based computer club for young people. Anyone aged 7 to 17 can visit a Dojo and learn to code, build a website, or create an app or game. Dojos are a space for kids and teens to explore technology in an informal, creative, safe and social environment. We promote a focus on youth mentoring, and on peer and self-led learning.

Who are we?

Coder Dojo Kerry is a group of people in the technology space in Kerry who are running Coder Dojo Classes in a number of towns across Kerry. We teach children between 7 and 17 the basics of software coding. We are volunteers. We try and get them interested in technology and how coding and software works. The classes are typically an hour and a half and parents who bring the children must wait around nearby while the class is going on. Our group of volunteers is driven by Tralee company Aspen Grove, the Tom Crean centre in the Kerry Technology Park and the Tech Industry Alliance.

How often are the classes on?

Classes are held once a week for an hour and a half where children between the ages of 7-17 will learn the basics of computer coding in the classes. We cover scratch and HTML coding and other coding languages.

What do children need to bring?

If they have a laptop (or parents laptop) we ask that they bring that. We have a limited number of laptops for children that do not have a laptop so don’t worry if you do not have one. A parent must stay near the child for the duration of the class.

How much are the classes?

The classes are free.

Will you be expanding to other towns any time soon?

Yes. We hope to expand to more towns. If you have a venue and are willing to help set up a class in your area, drop us an email at coderdojokerry@gmail.com. Keep an eye on our Facebook page which is linked on this website. For now, you can see what classes we run in our “Book a Class” section.
